In 2017, the Norway Maple that shaded Jubilee Grove was marked for removal. Initially it was not clear what damaged this tree. However, after the tree was cut down, you could see a lightening strike had damaged this tree nearly a decade earlier. The entire inside of the tree from top to bottom was badly damaged. Unfortunately, this damage means there was very little lumber that could be salvaged from this tree.

When a tree is damaged, it attempts to heal itself from the inside. This attempt at healing as created the contrasting colors on the grain. It has made for some really beautiful pieces such as the 2018 ornaments and some clocks.
